My sister Erin was 16 years old when our Uncle and his roommate Susan dressed her up and snuck her in to a club on Sunset Blvd to see “Susan’s brother’s girlfriend’s band”, The Motels, in 1979. That night changed her life. She started singing in local bands not long after.
She rarely missed any of your appearances since then. Unfortunately she passed away 5 months ago. In going through her things, I have found a number of photo albums, each one filled with photos, the ticket stubs and set list from individual shows she attended. One of which has a beautiful hand written note from you. I’ve come across at least 4 photos of you and Erin together. Obviously she treasured these memories.
You represented SO many things to her through the years, and she looked up to you not only musically, but the strength and attitude that you write about and display on stage.
On behalf of my sister, and every other woman you’ve influenced (including myself), I thank you.
Dearest Kimberly, first let me just send my love and sympathy. I’m so sorry for your loss, for it seems you and your sister were very close, and she was so young… things that make the hardest thing we have to face even harder. Your letter was so sweet and touching, and I’m humbled to be even a small part of her life… I hope you’re doing OK, and I thank you so much for sharing her memory. Again, I’m touched and saddened, and will keep you in my thoughts… carry on with courage…m.
I’m the guilty party that was both the Uncle of Erin as well as Susan’s roommate @ the time. True that we fluffed and teased and ‘re-created’ Erin to get here into the Roxy, right down to the fur coat. The irony was that I was the one who was asked for ID, Erin got a ‘wink’ and was lead to the open door. It was then we both knew that the night was going to be nothing short of amazing, and to the both of us, it was. Albeit, we’d both lost track of Susan, but to hear my niece relive the evening throughout the years [w/details I'd of never have remembered] proved to me that something so simple as attending a concert would not only put a HUGE smile on my niece’s face, but would lead her to follow her muse; music.
Many, many thanks, Martha….from one very grateful Uncle.
Dear Aunt Rick, I love you for what you did, I’m sure it was a hilarious evening… and it’s so nice to know that just going out to do what we do, as in my case going out to play a gig, can last all these years… still mean something… as I told KImberly, I truly am humbled, and proud that I apparently did a good job…
you have a wonderful family, I’m so glad to fit in in a tiny way… my love to you all…m.
Tonight I was conducting web-search activity, and came across The Motels. Having grown up in Australia, I was flooded with memories, but was greatly impressed upon by the iconic cover-art of the debut LP. While others would consider it typical commercial art, I consider it well stylized and the simple concept has lasting appeal. Therefore, is there anyway you could post a comment on your site explaining who was the art director, model, photographer, etc. It should be noted that The Motels had very impressive cover art to their earlier releases, so the story behind the designs would be helpful. As appreciation for the graphic cover- art goes on, as was the case for Barney Bubbles/Reid Miles, very little information about the making of art-work is ever reported.
Hi Rex, having lived through it I don’t remember much… that said, the first album cover was a copy of a post card from a motel on Sunset Blvd. In the old days and first incarnation of the Motels we would go and collect the motel postcards… they used to exist, they were promo devices, each motel would have postcards of two beds and a television, or the swimming pool… then there was this one… a very white woman with cellulite and big grin… on a red towel… I loved it and told Capitol I wanted to use it… they said nada… there was no way to track down the model, it would end in a law suit… so we reshot it at the same motel with a model, i lovingly refer to her as chlorine…. the second album “Careful” was a picture in an art book I found the artist Duggie Fields, the image was so striking to me, and maybe a little telling of that time in my life… I know if you go to Marty Jourard, former sax and keys, that he could probably give all the names and credits… I have been involved with all the art and videos and it is with shame that I can’t reel off credits… You’re right those people are amazing and need to have there credits known… I will dig, thanks…m.
You guys were great tonight!! I only wish you were higher on the bill (headlining actually) so you could feature Marty’s fantastic sax on more numbers!! I hope you can have him keep playing with you, and look forward to more So Cal dates next year. I’ve been spoiled having you around locally, and as much as I support your international revival, I enjoy being able to see you locally. God Bless on your Australian/New Zeland tour!
I won tickets to the San Francisco show! I bought All Four One, (on 8 track), when it came out in 1982! My all time favorite song is Change My Mind! Hope you sing it! Please don’t throw me out when I’m singing along at the top of my lungs! SOOOO EXCITED!
you sing it girl! I’m excited too… see you there Alison!…m.
So ummmm…does a Meet & Greet come with the tickets?
Loved the Motels! I first saw you in concert playing as the opening act for the Cars during their Panoram Tour in Omaha, Nebraska (1980). I immediately bought your latest album “Danger” a few days following the concert. I have recently acquired nearly your entire discography in CD through Ebay purchases. Still chasing down “Shock”, but otherwise complete. Glad to see the 2012 concert video clips!!!
Ooops…the album was “Careful” with Danger as the first song!
Thanks so much Evan, it was just this year that finally all the albums were re-released, there’s a very good reissue of Shock available at The Motels store… Hope to see you out there on the road… all the best…m.
I bet you still want to be with the boys. I don’t think you ever knew my name. I rented a reel-to-reel Nagra a few times and recorded you at Ansel Fore Theater and Madame Wongs. You told me your mom used to read you Jack Kerouac. I was crazy about you. You were low down. ..live fiction. Billy
Got to see you at BergenPAC last night! It was the best! The surprise of you strolling down the isle singing Total Control and reaching out to your fans actually got me a little verklempt! I was so lucky to be one of the ones you hugged and sang to! I want to thank you for taking the time after the show to meet and sign autographs. You signed a mini poster & Apocalypso cd for me and gave me a hug & kiss it was so sweet of you !(Tall shaved head guy with goatee & siver loop earings) Love you!
I know it’s probably cost prohibitive at the smaller venues, but I really have missed hearing the saxaphone on the songs live. Hopefully at the larger venues you can accomodate. Either way you all still sound great
Maybe have a ‘guest’ sax in the different cities? If I could play sax I’d ‘pay’ to do it ! I’m off to buy a saxaphone…. Should have it nailed by the time Motels play Lake Arrowhead next year! lol
Got my tickets for the show at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood NJ! Looking forward to it! Thank you for making the trip,it’s so close to Long Island NY (home) that we can go!
Hope to meet you,all the best to you and yours!….Johnny B.
Can’t wait to see you tonight at the Marquee (M15) tonight! Always a good time.
We missed that. Hope that you will return to the Marquee 15 sometime in the future.
got a feeling we’ll see you there, thanks for the note…m.
Hoping my schedule allows me to catch one of your So.Cal. shows in May
Hope to see you soon…Dave @Takamine from Legends Show
sorry bout the late reply… just no catching up… years not over yet… might just see you yet…m.
Is there any reason why The Motels 2nd album is not available on i-Tunes? “Cry Baby” is one of my favorites tracks.
all the albums are finally available, and you can even find them on this site… store is almost opened, but orders are being taken, thanks for the note…m.
Thank you for the reply. I’m thrilled you will be making it back East! Just had to mention I just watched a video of you on you tube singing Only the Lonley at the Canyon Club April 5th….Truley magical!
thanks again Johnny… see you soon…m.
Those threads you were wearing at the Bayou in DC, and the shoes, what were they 9″? heels I’ll never forget. Also saw you in Va Beach at Peabody’s my friends band opened for you guys Probably 1980,81. Love the music still! Come back to D.C. or better yet VB or Charlottesville VA. Bill B.
the shoes… I’ve given up on the heels, but probably have more fun these days… We’re trying to get out your way this year, see you then!…m.
Thanks Bill, ya the shoes… think I was crippled for life! we’re starting to get to the East Coast more often, in fact I was just pretty close… keep an eye on the site all will be revealed. Till then, take care and be good to yourself…m.
Your voice & music have always had a special place in my soul since seeing you on tv singing Total Control on American Bandstand! I hope you do make it to the East Coast (NEW YORK) It would be nice to see you live in concert. I wish you all the best in all you do!
Thank you so much Johnny! It looks like we will be making it back East this year, hope you can make it, all the best…m.
The updated website is great. Been a big fan for a long time. Was so psyched to see you in boston a couple years back. Just wondering if any east coast plans are falling together?
Thanks Adam, management is working on the East Coast now, we’ll keep our fingers crossed…m.
Hey Martha I see you spend time in Oregon and was wondering if you would be able to play at my wedding on the Oregon coast in August?
ah, I’ll pass that on to management… but congrats!…m.
super-excited to be opening for you and The Motels with my singer Devon Rowland this Fri. night April 5th at the Canyon Club, gonna be a fun night Vince
I can’t wait, it’s gonna be super fun! see you there…m.
Thank you Martha for your reply! I hope you also get the time and opportunity to, come back down to NZ soon too. xxoo Sarah
Hi Martha, I was wondering if you’d ever consider touring, New Zealand in the Summer of 2013 maybe? I’ve been a big fan of your work with The Motels since, I was around 14 ( I think? I’m 28 now) when I discovered my parents, copy of “Careful” and fell in love with the lyrics. Thanks for your time, Sarah xxoo
Oh you know I would love to return to New Zealand… one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been… I truly hope we will be back soon. In the meantime, thank you Sara, for hanging in all these years, really appreciate it!…m.
Any plans on Martha touring with or without The Motels in 2013??? (fingers crossed!) Thanks! =)
Yes Becky, we’ll be out there new shows should be announced soon! Thanks for asking…m.
martha, anxiously awaiting your 2013 schedule! Barb k
So am I! it’s starting to come together and looks like FUN! see you out there!…m.
Worst website in history…
You’re probably right, but hang on… it might just get better…m.
Did the motels ever make a recording with title `Check-in-Time`with ten songs?A couple of the songs i know. The others NO.Thank you in advance,Scott
I don’t know about that one?? Is it all Motels songs? or an eighties comp?… very curious, thanks for the tip…m.
I got the songs back in the early days of Napster.I don`t if someone compiled the songs and gave an album title name`check-in-time`who knows?songs are`,catch as catch can, every little tear,i cant believe,if i only knew,if you can`t stand the fire,in over my head,in the meantime, mister grey, last temptation, will you be there` in that order`maybe the song names might help.Waiting for your reply,Scott
Wow Scott you hit the demo bonanza… those are all songs that were never released, or weren’t supposed to be… don’t know what to say about it, I’m going to pass this along to management, see what he says. I really appreciate you giving me the heads up… hope you enjoyed them even if they we’re demos…m.
One little important question? Is it, ” We lie about each others drinks”? Or, “we lie about each others dreams”?
Hope you come back to Lake Arrowhead this summer!
I’ve always been a fan. But here’s a cute story. My lil cousin was trying to cheer me up and to my surprise he “mimed” , “Only The Lonely” to me. Perfectly! He’s a 16yr old Skate Punk! Martha is ‘TIMELESS’!
Love that story Dawn! and thank your cousin for me… all the best…m.
Thanks for your reply Martha, know that it is heartfelt. I do miss hearing you over the radio, even though the radio is no longer just the radio anymore, times have changed, so must we. There is still a lot of opportunity out there, and I believe much demand for authentic, quality and emotionally and artistically pure music such as your own. Good luck this year Martha, and I hope you come to LA soon?
Where have you been all of these years? I had followed you religiously during my college years back in the 1980s, both at the peak of your popularity (and before that), then almost over night, the music died. Of course I am exaggerating, but you WERE, to a large extent, the soundtrack of the 1980s, which makes you ICONIC. Your beautiful voice and no less beautiful visage had many a men, myself included, spellbound. We miss you, and want you back. Finally, why has your very best music gone out of print, I simply cannot understand that?
Jeff what an incredibly sweet and humbling note… believe it or not, I’ve never stopped doing this thing I do. I’ll admit it’s been a bit under the radar, but I have a feeling this year may be different… so keep a look out, we’re hoping for new music, new video and lots of shows… thank you again…m.
PLEASE COME TO AUSTIN!!!! I haven’t seen you all since the US Festival!!!
Hopefully this year… lot in the works… hang in, I’ll see you soon…m.
Been a fan of the Motels for a long long time. My wife and I have two boys (7 years old) and when we listen to the mp3 player in the van, they always request “Remember the Nights” out of nearly a thousand songs. It’s got to be that golden voice that captivated me when I was a youngster! Say ‘Thanks’ to the rest of the Motels for the great tunes. I hope you guys make it out to the Kansas City area sometime.
what a wonderful note! Really? your kids like the Motels? I’m honored… I also love KC, maybe this year we can get out there… Happy New Year…m.
Happy New Year, Martha. I wish you health, love, peace, prosperity, and all other good things for 2013. I’m looking forward to seeing your show soon and hopefully get a chance to meet you! All the best.
Happy New Year to You Tim! May you have a wonderful new year, and let’s hope we run into each other out there on the road!…m.
I would like to let you know many years later Don’t Tell Me The Time is still one of My favourite songs.are their plans to release a new solo cd here in Australia.
Hi Adam, thank you so much for that… I am going to try very hard to not only get some new product, but also to get over there to tour… miss you all…m.
Martha it was great meeting and talking to you last night! I just bought your “Essentials” album on iTunes. Love your voice. Can’t wait to see you again.
Great to meet you! it was a very fun night!! we’ll get that picture signed… have a wonderful holiday season!…m.
Hi Martha! I just wanted to say THANK YOU for so many wonderful songs you have gifted the world. I am such a huge fan of you and The Motels. Your voice and beauty has stood the test of time. As a musician myself, I know how special it is when fans show appreciation for ones craft. So here I am doing that for you with lots of love, respect and admiration.
Cananyone tell me where I can get a CD copy of the 1979 album Motels
Hi Zac, I think ebay might be your best bet… Capitol has never released all the Motels albums, they licensed some of them at various times, “the Motels” the first album was in release for a short time… good luck, if I had one I’d send it to you…m.
Long time Motels fan. Have seen you numerous times in various cities incl;uding L.A., Denver, Chicago. We worked up a deconstructed, punk version of Mission of Mercy. Hope you don’t hate it too much
Fate Fowler & Joe Falco
totally great!!! I think you did a great job and I’m a huge Obama supporter! I hope with all my heart he gets another 4 yrs. maybe the agenda will shift from “keeping him a one term president” to getting something done!! thanks so much…m.
How was the show at the bowl?
It was pretty damn Awesome! Motels had a good time!!!…m.
Hi how do i contact you guys about a new zealand tour ?
Hi Stan Martha here… I’m out on the road right now, there should be a contact for my agent on the web site… Rob Juarez. at the. Boss Booking agency. I’m back next week,I’ll follow up…thanks…m.
Hi Stan, back home, after playing the Hollywood Bowl… lot’s of fun, my agents # is 310-542-0903… would love to come back to NZ, one of the most beautiful places on the planet, thanks…m.
Martha, if you need any help with the site, let me know. They can be daunting and laborious. The side scrolling thing can be a little confusing to people ( some of the sections look blank)
Thanks for the voice.
I have enjoyed your music for many years! Truly one of the most underrated great bands of the eighties. Haunting vocals that still make me quiver. Thank you Martha and crew!
thank you, you make it all the more wonderful…m.
With Kiss releasing the Kissology Dvds box sets that span the bands entire career and making them big bucks I do not see why other artist do not follow. The Motels need to release all the music videos and live concerts and other goodies on a dvd set. People would buy this stuff if it where available legit instead of stealing it online. What Gives?
Been a fan of yours from back in the analog record days, lol (still have the Little Robbers vinyl). Saw you back in the early 80′s at a few small clubs and The Dome here in VA Bch. Then more recently here w/ the B-52′s at the American Music Festival out on the sand. You didn’t disappoint. Glad you’re still hitting it and hope to see you back this way again.
Thank you so much Lee… the B-52′s are awesome that was a great night, hope to get back soon…m.
Hi again Martha, problem solved so sorry to have contacted you in this way. Hope last night’s gig went well!
Sorry to confuse you, Martha. I guess you have no connection with it then? Here’s a link anyway.
My friend Randy put that amazing site together… he knows more about me than I do…m.
Can you get in touch about the image that’s with Midnight Nightingale on the Motels Info site, please.
Hi Grits, I’m confused, can you direct me to the Motels info site, so I know what you’re talking about?? thanks…m.
tell it to the moon is a prefect opening song and just like you is a classic……but really, ANY of the songs would be great hear.
Thanks for the reply.
Hey M. –
What’s up with Facebook?? No “Friend” request??
I am going to have to ask him about that one. Right now he is trying to recover from having a scenery wall fall on him at the Shrine. He’s a bit beat up but he will heal, nothing broken but stitches on his left hand and he is either growing horns or has a huge knot on his head, LOL. We are going to try and make the Canyon gig, if so I look forward to meeting you, hopefully.
Hope he heals up quick! I’ll be out after the show, so come on over and say hi…m.
Looking forward to seeing you guys again in Lake Arrowhead…. and possibly stalking the night before in Hollywood? Love your hits and cant believe I can enjoy them live in such a great place as Lake Arrowhead! A-Men!
P.S. we have renamed the Lake after Howard, the guy who used to drive your kids to school when you lived in the valley……..”Lake Howard”… ( my mate in UK mispronounced it..and we just ran with it…. ) 0x0x0x0xx0x
Awesomeness! Love Arrowhead!! ah, excuse me… Howard… can’t wait to get back there!…m.
I understand that my husband really likes you and the Motels and that there may be a bit of brief history there somewhere. I would love to get him to see you play at Brixton on July 20 as that is right before his birthday. Oh by the way his name is Tom Terry Jr. He is in a band now playing harmonica they are a blues rock band “The Highway Bandits” they are on facebook, reverbnation and rockcityclub if you are interested in hearing some “in your face blues”
Have a good one!
Bring him on down, we’ll try to give him a good birthday bash… and much success to the “Bandits”…m.
Hello Hello Martha–
Was speaking to Jeff about playing in L.A. and **Voila*** decided to stop in at yer new site [by the way, check yer Facebook messages from “Otto’s Guitars”…. we go back a few years!
First Impression: “Wow..nice and minimalistic”
Second Impression: “She’s only just started it..”
I’m sure it’ll look great… I like the colour scheme and the layout.
Been living in Austin..it’s very………………………………hot.
Any gigs coming up in the Austin area??
Thanks for the note, yeah minimalist… otherwise known as not very good at this stuff, and life has been bogging me down with such time consuming details that I haven’t had a lot of time to spend on it… but it’s nice to have peeps stop by and ponder it… much as I do… Try to stay cool, all the best…m.
Martha – Do you ever consider working any of the Policy material into a set. Twenty-five years later, I still think it’s a brilliant collection of songs!
I think it might be time, to roll some of those out… what are your favorites?…m.
I just finished watching “made in heaven” on the telly. Just thought I’d look you up. Your voice is beautiful. I like the slow and rhythmic beat..like a deep heartbeat sound….very soothing and I couldn’t walk away.
I read your new website. Yes, it is very time consuming to set one up. Also frustrating since they didn’t teach computers when I went to school. But you’ll soon get the hang of it, and you’ll be posting and writing stuff all the time. It can be fun and a creative let out.
Anyways, back to re-finishing my house deck with oil…California sun is a b***** on wood. Thank you for you time. Good luck!
thanks for the note Bernadette, yep, between projects I plan to conquer this new world… good luck with the deck, (I just finished stripping the beams and woodwork in my living room, gotta love the wood!)…m.
